Google maps and location head Marissa Mayer named Yahoo CEO

Beleaguered Yahoo has named Google veteran Marissa Mayer its new CEO. Mayer, who joined Google in 1999 as just its 20th employee, most recently led the company's Local, Maps, and Location Services unit, spearheading products including Google Maps, Google Earth, Zagat, Street View and local search across both the mobile and desktop platforms. Mayer replaces interim CEO Ross Levinsohn, who stepped into the role in May after Scott Thompson resigned in the wake of controversy over misstatements on his academic record. Mayer is Yahoo's fifth CEO in the last five years. Release
