Google Maps integrates Waze real-time traffic incident reporting

More than two months after Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) acquired crowdsourced location services firm Waze for a reported $1.1 billion, its Google Maps for Mobile application is now integrating real-time traffic incident reporting from Waze users.

Google Maps now includes information from Waze.

"When Wazers report accidents, construction, road closures and more on Waze, the updates will also appear on the Google Maps app for Android and iOS," explained Google Maps Vice President Brian McClendon. The update impacts Google Maps for Mobile users in the U.S., the U.K., Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Germany, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Switzerland.

Unlike many previous acquisitions, Google has not shut down Waze and continues to support its standalone apps for Android and iOS. Writing on the Waze blog, CEO Noam Bardin notes the app recently incorporated Google Search services alongside search providers like Yelp and foursquare. "We have something new for our map editors, too--the Waze Map Editor will now include Google Maps Street View and satellite imagery as tools to make it easier to correct map errors reported by the community," Bardin said.

Waze offers turn-by-turn GPS navigation, traffic reports and social networking features to users on the go. More than 47 million drivers use Waze apps across Google's Android and Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS platforms.

Apple also licenses data from Waze for its Apple Maps service. It remains unclear how the Google acquisition might affect Waze's partnership with Apple--Google and Apple are fierce rivals in the mobile space, and Apple last year dumped Google Maps integration across its iOS platform in favor of Apple Maps. Apple has publicly denied rumors it too considered purchasing Waze--last month, the computing giant acquired crowdsourced location services provider Locationary, whose Saturn platform merges information from more than 250 different feeds and repositories to assemble a real-time database for local business listings.
