I came across some interesting stats from IDC about mobility spending. It seems that the healthcare and retail sectors will lead the charge in terms of spending on mobility, which is expected to jump to $1.85 trillion by 2019 for both enterprise and consumer markets, up from $1.6 trillion last year.

Mobility started with the concept of shifting employees from being deskbound to being mobile, but it has advanced to the point where many enterprises are now embracing capabilities unique to both mobility and their industries, explained IDC in a release.

"Today, mobility is more than just smartphones and apps, it is the lynchpin in driving new consumer behaviors, the future of work, and the digital transformation we are witnessing in real-time," said Carrie MacGillivray, vice president for mobile and Internet of Things at IDC.

Of the $1.85 trillion spending forecast for 2019, healthcare is expected to make up $30 billion. That spending is being fueled by changing industry compliance requirements, government mandates and the need for specialized devices, software and secure storage, noted IDC.

On the retail front, retailers are increasingly linking supply chains to mobile customer ordering capabilities. This process is expected to spread to emerging markets, spurring a 5.6 percent compound annual growth rate through 2019 in retail mobility spending.

In addition, small and medium-sized businesses across industries are expected to ramp up their mobility spending. SMBs will develop industry-specific mobile apps, and startups in emerging markets will develop their own mobile-first organizations with devices and apps, predicted IDC.

"While mobile device ownership and general app uptake has already impacted consumers and businesses large and small, utilizing mobile capabilities to drive wholesale digital transformation in personal and professional spaces continues to represent a growth opportunity for vendors and channel partners," said Chris Chute, vice president for IDC's customer insights and analysis group.

While healthcare and retail will be at the forefront of mobility spending according IDC forecasts, the mobility revolution is a broad-based movement that is transforming many industries, as demonstrated by FierceMobileIT coverage over the years. Stay tuned. - Fred, @FierceFred1
