How to build a strong wireless strategy

By learning and listening to the experience of public sector agencies who've recently deployed wireless networking tools and systems as part of disaster recovery and response efforts, today's business enterprises cannot only get valuable insight on overcoming hurdles but a jump on best practice approaches. As the city of Norfolk's CIO relates, his goal is to give every city employee wireless capability. He's in the midst of mapping out a "strategic wireless master plan" that will create a blueprint for future wireless projects--from expanding access points to upgrading emergency response networks.

That doesn't mean that government tech leaders don't recognize the inherent risk in providing wireless networking access, and federal agencies have worked to try and help mitigate and reduce the risk levels. The National Institute of Standards and Technology has issued guidelines that focus on reducing the risks of wireless technologies, from deploying tools such as authentication and VPNs to encryption options. Even the national CIO organization is working to provide support, knowledge and insight as it clearly recognizes that wireless is where everyone is going.
