How to secure a mixed mobile device environment
Security will likely always be an issue in the wireless and mobility segment, as it is unlikely that hackers and malcontents will ever go away. But when it comes to organizations that boast several different types of mobile devices along with a very mobile and active workforce, security efforts can prove challenging. Yet as one company, Capmark Financial Group, relates, good security can be put in place with some strategic planning and understanding of what mobile functionality is really required on the user side.
The Pennsylvania-based mortgage company set up a wireless mesh network for its 3,000 staffers housed in 100 offices around the globe. The network supports voice, data, wireless video surveillance, a range of cellular technologies for WAN applications, and point-to-point wireless between offices as part of the company's disaster recovery plan. Staffers use either a BlackBerry, Audiovox, Imate or Palm device to process loan information. While such an extensive network and mobile device strategy can often prove burdensome, the company has plugged in specific security for each aspect, says Andy Farkas, assistant vice president of emerging technologies.
