As if the explosion in the popularity of netbooks wasn't enough, Hewlett-Packard's new Pavilion dv2 is eying the niche between netbooks and ultraportables. The dv2 packs AMD's new Athlon Neo processor, a 1.6GHz chip that runs with a power envelope of just 15 watts, and is comparable to Intel's ULV Core 2 Duo processors powering most ultraportables today.

Factors differentiating the dv2 from conventional netbooks range from its discrete ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3410 graphics chip to its nice 12.1-inch LED display. Though its weight of 3.8 pounds is slightly heavier than the 2.5 and 3 pound ultraportables, the shocker is in its price. The dv2 starts out at a mere $699 and tops out at $899 for standard configurations. In addition, the dv2 will also come with the option for WWAN, with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi as standard.
