HP's new Access Catalog taps into growing demand for enterprise app stores
Seeking to tap into the growing demand for enterprise app stores, HP launched on Thursday a mobile enterprise app store product called HP Access Catalog.
The software-as-a-service (SaaS) product provides a secure app store for employees to browse, search and download mobile apps and digital content to their mobile devices as well as desktops. It is delivered via native mobile clients and a web interface that supports Android and iOS platforms, HP explains.
While primarily designed for enterprise-developed apps, enterprises could include public apps in the catalog as well, explains Tim Rochte, director of product management for web services at HP Software. "If company X says we use Dropbox, we can put an entry into the catalog. From the employee perspective, the Access Catalog is a one-stop shop for mobile solutions," Rochte tells FierceMobileIT.
Access to the catalog can be secured either through a native identity management system or integrated with an existing enterprise identity management system. The catalog enables IT organizations to push out updates to ensure users have the most current applications and data.
HP Access Catalog is hosted on HP's data center and leverages open-standard technologies, such as HTML 5, and single sign-on authentication and authorization capabilities using SAML 2.0. Pricing is based on an annual per-user subscription rate.
"We are bringing a consumer-like experience to the employee. We are delivering a catalog that can work from their phone or other device. It gives the ability to find the right apps they need…It also provides the ability for users to provide reviews and feedback about those apps," John Jeremiah, senior product marketing manager for HP Anywhere, tells FierceMobileIT.
HP also offers the Access Catalog as an integrated component of its HP Anywhere enterprise mobility platform or as part of its HP Vertica Marketplace, which is an online store where customers and developers can find downloads for their mobile deployments.
