Infographic: Utilities traffic makes up close to 18 percent of mobile data usage in North America

Web traffic makes up 44 percent of mobile data usage, followed by media and social networking, says ACG

Did you know that utilities traffic makes up around 18 percent of the total mobile data usage in North America?

Additionally, web traffic makes up 44 percent of data usage, media 27 percent, social networking 10 percent, gaming 0.7 percent, and file sharing a mere half of a percent, ACG Research data shows.

Consumption of multimedia applications--YouTube, Netflix, and ESPN--is approximately 70 percent of total mobile data usage. "Capping of unlimited data plans has led consumers to consciously move toward using multimedia apps, mostly smartphones, while on Wi-Fi coverage," according to ACG analyst Ray Mota.

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) are smartphone operating system and app store leaders, according to ACG.

Google dominates in the mobile application eco system, both from data traffic consumption and percentage of users, while Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) is second in data traffic consumption and percentage of users.
