Intel and Nokia join forces on mobile front

Intel and Nokia announced on Tuesday a wide-ranging partnership spanning several fronts: From chips to mobile hardware and software for mobile devices. Intel and Nokia will collaborate on several open-source mobile Linux software projects.

Intel will acquire the use of HSPA/3G modem IP for use in future products, while Nokia appears to be planning a foray into the Mobile Internet Device (MIDs) market. Jason Hiner of TechRepublic thinks that getting back into the MID market would be a mistake for Nokia, given its recent discontinuation of the Nokia N800/N810 Internet Tablet.

Details are scant overall, though. Jack Gold, founder and principal analyst of J.Gold Associates, thinks that this strategic relationship is a win-win for both Intel and Nokia. In addition, he said that the marketplace will benefit, as this will allow for "more capable wireless devices to make their way to market in the next couple of years."
