Intel, Nokia introduce MeeGo Linux-based OS

Nokia and Intel announced an open-sourced, Linux-based platform called MeeGo aimed at smartphones, netbooks and other communications devices.

MeeGo will merge with the Linux-based Maemo platform Nokia uses on its own N900 smartphone. The new platform is expected to launch in the second quarter. MeeGo won't replace the Symbian platform, Nokia said, but will use Symbian on lower-end devices.

The new OS combines the Intel-developed Moblin core and the user interface toolkit from Maemo, and it will support both Intel's Atom and ARM architectures. Previously, Nokia had been independently developing its Maemo platform, which has powered all its Internet tablets. Intel's Moblin has been designed primarily for netbooks. While the two Linux-based platforms have a lot in common, there are a number of technical differences that can be difficult to reconcile for developers.

Nokia is the only company that has said it will ship phones with MeeGo so far. However, more hardware partners and operators will announce support and product plans for MeeGo in the coming weeks, Intel said.
