Intel working on ultra-thin processors for laptops
Intel is working on new processors targeted at a new wave of ultra-thin laptops expected to be released this summer. These processors are coined as Consumer Ultra-Low-Voltage (CULV) processors.
Ultra-thin is a big move for Intel, and will be Intel's primary mobile market focus in the next few months, affirms Erik Reid, who is the director of marketing for the Mobile Products Group at Intel. The CULV processors will have "great battery life" and a very low power envelope. In fact, the lowest-power for the CULV category may consume mere watts more than Intel's Atom processor, which itself is rated at no more than 2.5 watts.
In the meantime, you can expect to see the first Nehalem-based mobile processor later this year. The initial processors will be quad core, and feature the same thermal envelope as the current generation of quad-core Core2 mobile processors.
