International standards body okays WiGig standard

WiGig delivers high-speed wireless connection up to 7 Gbps on short ranges

The IEEE standards body has approved the wireless gigabit, or WiGig, standard (802.11ad), paving the way for wider adoption of short-range, high-speed wireless technology.

The WiGig technology delivers high-speed wireless connections up to 7 Gbps at short range using the unlicensed 60 GHz spectrum. WiGig enables high-performance wireless data, display and audio applications that supplement the capabilities of wireless local area network, or LAN, devices.

The speed enabled by WiGig is 10 times faster than the maximum speed enabled by the previous IEEE 802.11 family of standards, the organization said in a statement.

"By migrating up to the next ISM band (60 GHz), we break ground on new spectrum for IEEE 802.11, enable an order of magnitude improvement in performance and enable usages that have never before been possible with existing IEEE 802.11, namely wireless docking and streaming video," commented Bruce Kraemer, chair of the IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN Working Group.

The WiGig standards add a "fast session transfer" feature that eases the transition for mobile devices between the 60 GHz band and the legacy 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, the IEEE explained. This feature enables wireless computing devices to be "best connected" so they can operate at optimal performance, it added.

Through spectral reuse and beam forming technology, the WiGig standard allows users in dense deployment areas to maintain top speeds without interfering with each other or having to share bandwidth, IEEE explained.

The IEEE announcement follows closely on the announced merger of the Wi-Fi Alliance and WiGig Alliance. The two organizations said that they will enter a period of diligence and planning, with the intent to complete transitions of both the technology development activity and WiGig assets to the Wi-Fi Alliance by the middle of 2013.
