iPad applications close in on 5,000 after first month
Apple's App Store has grown to include 4,870 applications optimized for the iPad since the tablet device first hit stores on April 3, according to new data issued by app store analytics firm Distimo. In the last two weeks alone, the number of available iPad apps has grown by 32.7 percent--Games remains the dominant category with 1,577 titles (representing 32 percent of all iPad apps), followed by Entertainment (455 titles) and Books (396 titles).
Distimo reports that 80 percent of all iPad applications fall into the Paid Apps segment--by comparison, 73 percent of the roughly 186,000 iPhone and iPod touch applications carry premium price tags. The average iPad app costs $4.67, as opposed to $3.82 on iPhone--Medical apps for iPad lead the way at an average price of $42.11, followed by Finance apps at $18.48. On the iPhone, Medical apps average $10.74, and Finance apps average $5.74.
