The iPhone is still not ready for the enterprise
According to Don Reisinger of eWeek, the release of the iPhone software version 3.0 today will mark a sort of transition in which the iPhone finally becomes ready for the enterprise. And why not, reasons Reisinger, what with Version 3.0 featuring some of the most enterprise-friendly features on any iPhone to date?
While I do not disagree that the iPhone will continue to grow in influence and remain a major player in the consumer mobile space, I think it will be some time yet before the iPhone is able to compete in the enterprise space. Even compared with Microsoft's Windows Mobile, its weak enterprise management abilities will certainly doom any serious, large-scale deployments in the enterprise.
Finally, its death knell comes from its lack of data efficiency compared to the likes of the BlackBerry. This makes it much more expensive, in terms of overseas data charges, for executives who travel.
