IRS dangers from wireless attacks

The information the IRS gets and keeps is sensitive for every taxpayer. That's why it's so worrying when the Inspector General announces that wireless deployments and policies make wireless technology a significant risk for data theft and unauthorized intrusion. The report faults deployments in four cities for particular weakness and states that no single network is completely safe from the risk of wireless attack. It further attacks the IRS by saying that the agency might not know when data theft occurs because they have so few people monitoring the safety of the wireless networks. Wireless safety is not a new issue, but it's one where lessons should be drawn from the IRS--by the IRS itself, and later, by enterprises and individuals concerned with how to keep from being as vulnerable as the tax man.
