King expands 'Candy Crush Saga' to Kakao Talk messaging platform

Cross-platform social gaming company King is extending its mobile blockbuster Candy Crush Saga to Kakao Talk, the free South Korean mobile messaging application in use by more than 110 million subscribers.

Candy Crush Saga--available for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android--offers more than 400 levels of match-three puzzles. King said the latest version of the game includes new features built expressly for the messenger-based Kakao Talk platform. "Kakao users will be able to fully immerse themselves in all aspects of the social world of Candy Crush Saga, from sending requests to friends via Kakao Talk's chat, to sharing quirky emoticons which have been exclusively developed for Kakao," said King Games Guru Tommy Palm.

Mobile gamers across the globe play Candy Crush Saga more than 700 million times each day, and it was the top revenue-generating iOS and Android application in July 2013, according to data issued last month by analytics firm Distimo. Another 15.5 million people play Candy Crush Saga each day on Facebook (NASDAQ:FB). In all King offers 150 exclusive games in 14 languages, and said last month that its titles generate a combined 1 billion daily plays across the mobile, Facebook and platforms, up from 70 million in May 2013. King has hired banks to explore a U.S. initial public offering, sources familiar with the move told The Wall Street Journal this summer.

Kakao Talk is also a reliable generator of mobile game revenues. Three titles optimized for the platform--WeMade's Windrunner, Devsisters' Cookie Run and CJ E&M's Fives--ranked among the top five revenue-generating Google Play games worldwide during the second quarter of 2013 according to a recent App Annie and IDC report, behind only GungHo Online's pacesetting Puzzle & Dragons and Candy Crush Saga.
