KPCB: Android adoption growing 6x faster than iPhone
Adoption of smartphones running Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android is increasing six times faster than adoption of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) rival iPhone, up from 4x in May 2012, according to new data from KPCB partner Mary Meeker.
Speaking Monday at Bloomberg's San Francisco headquarters, Meeker said that shipments of Internet-enabled devices running Android surpassed shipments of devices powered by Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows for the first time ever during the first quarter of 2012. Manufacturers shipped roughly 90 million Android units during the first three months of this year, compared to roughly 82 million Windows PCs.
By the end of 2013, Meeker believes quarterly shipments of Android devices will eclipse 160 million, followed by Windows at 100 million and iOS at 80 million. The iPad tablet is fueling iOS's growth, she said--iPad adoption is now growing five times faster than iPhone adoption, increasing from 3x six months ago. Meeker added that the combined global smartphone and tablet installed base is on pace to surpass the combined desktop/notebook PC installed base by the second quarter of 2013. Even so, there are still only about 1 billion smartphone users worldwide, as opposed to 5 billion feature phone users.
Android powered three out of every four smartphones shipped worldwide during the third quarter of 2012, market intelligence firm IDC reported last week. Android device shipments reached a record-high 136 million units during the quarter, representing 75 percent of all 181.1 million smartphones shipped during the period; iOS trails far behind with third-quarter shipments of of 26.9 million, translating to a market share of 14.9 percent.
