MasterCard, shopkick team for consumer rewards program


MasterCard is partnering with location-based mobile marketing platform shopkick to offer consumer rewards and special offers at select retail locations across the U.S.

MasterCard will offer cardholders shopkick's proprietary reward currency, known as "kicks," when they link their credit card to shopkick's Buy & Collect program and make qualifying purchases at participating retailers including American Eagle Outfitters, Arden B., Crate and Barrel, Old Navy, Toys"R"Us and Wet Seal. Consumers can redeem kicks for gift cards, music downloads, movie tickets or other offers. For a limited time, MasterCard also will add 250 bonus kicks to the cardholder's account for each card they link to Buy & Collect.

To collect kicks, shoppers must physically enter brick-and-mortar locations--the free shopkick mobile app (available for devices running Apple's [NASDAQ:AAPL] iOS and Google's [NASDAQ:GOOG] Android) leverages patent-pending location technology which automatically identifies the user's presence in partner stores, crediting rewards and delivering relevant offers directly to their account. MasterCard and shopkick also will offer tools and analytics data to help merchants more effectively measure the effectiveness of their location-enabled marketing efforts.

Shopkick first launched the Buy & Collect program late last year in collaboration with MasterCard rival Visa. Shopkick now boasts more than 3 million active users in all, with verified walk-ins to partner stores topping the 7 million mark. Last month, Target rolled out the shopkick program across all of its 1,764 U.S. retail locations.
