MDM is 'table stakes' for security in the BYOD space, says Symantec chief
WASHINGTON, D.C.--Mobile device management is "table stakes" for security in the BYOD space, commented Steve Bennett, president and CEO of Symantec (NASDAQ: SYMC), during his keynote discussion at the Gartner Security and Risk Management summit being held here this week.
Bennett said his company is focusing on integrating the various security BYOD solutions in the enterprise into a comprehensive platform.
Currently, Symantec offers mobile device and application management, as well as mobile security and mobile data loss prevention products. In its most recent Magic Quadrant MDM report, Gartner puts Symantec in the visionaries quadrant. AirWatch, Citrix (NASDAQ: CTXS), Fiberlink, Good Technology, MobileIron and SAP were named as leaders in the MDM market.
Although Symantec is best known for its antivirus products, Bennett said his company is expanding its offerings outside of the AV space, such as its mobile and cloud offerings. For example, Symantec has an $800 million cloud security business.
In January, Symantec unveiled a new two-year Symantec 4.0 corporate strategy that involved a reassessment of existing products and services, the launch of new products, and the layoffs of 1,000 employees, according to a report by Bloomberg.
At the Gartner summit, Bennett said that the company is working on 10 new integrated security offerings based on road maps that will be rolled out in the next few months.
To address customer complaints about support problems, Bennett said that the company has invested in technical support and set up metrics to make sure the changes are moving in the right direction.
Bennett warned that the attackers are becoming more sophisticated, and that security vendors and enterprises have to step up to the plate and deploy integrated solutions that will improve protections against attacks.
