Microsoft to unveil Web-based sync service for smartphones

Modeling after Apple's MobileMe service, Microsoft will be unveiling its own Web-based service called "My Phone" at the Mobile World Congress trade show event at Barcelona next week. What does the service cost? It's free.

Even though Microsoft holds third place in terms of worldwide market share of smartphones, it trails formidable opponents in the form of Nokia and Research In Motion. It is also increasingly under siege by incumbent Apple, who has made spectacular gains to increase its market share to 9 percent in 2008, according to IDC. In addition, the announcement--and eventual availability--of the Palm Pre will hardly be helpful too.

The My Phone service is expected to wirelessly synchronize data stored on Windows Mobile smartphones, backing up data ranging from contact information, calendar appointments, even photos and text messages to a website. Unlike Apple's MobileMe, it lacks the ability to synchronize the data applications running on users' computers at this point. Regardless, these features will be incredibly useful for users who lose their phone.
