Microsoft working on fix for Windows Phone 8 reboots, freezes

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is probing a series of random reboot and freezing issues plaguing smartphones running its new Windows Phone 8 operating system, with a solution slated for release next month.

Owners of Windows Phone 8 handsets including the Nokia (NYSE:NOK) Lumia 920 and HTC 8X began complaining about seemingly random reboots earlier this month. "We're continuing to investigate some reports of phones rebooting and have identified a cause with our partner," Microsoft told TechCrunch. "We are working to get an over-the-air update out in December."

Microsoft declined to offer additional details on the suspected cause behind the problem. Nokia recently said "[We] suspect some apps may be at the root of the issue when left running in the background. While we learn more, we advise people when finished with an application to navigate away using the back button to ensure it is no longer active." Some users have reported fewer issues after uninstalling the Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) for Windows Phone app, while others have blamed the HTC Hub portal.

Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 8 late last month. The overhauled platform touts multi-core Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) chipsets to bolster smartphone performance and optimize battery life, a choice of three screen resolutions, integration of VoIP and video chat, a customizable start screen and Wallet Hub, which supports Near Field Communications-enabled m-commerce services. Users can also share content across Windows Phone 8, Windows 8 for PCs and Xbox gaming consoles.

Earlier this week, The Verge reported Microsoft also is at work on a Windows Phone 8 update expected to include virtual private network support, always-on Wi-Fi connectivity and audio improvements. Microsoft likely will unveil the Windows Phone 8 update--codenamed "Apollo Plus"--during February 2013's Mobile World Congress event.
