Mini-tablet demand fuels doubling of tablet display shipments in Q1, says IHS


Demand for mini-tablets fueled a doubling of tablet display shipments in the first quarter from the year-ago quarter, according to the latest stats from IHS.

Global shipments of tablet touch-screen displays reached 45.2 million in the first quarter, compared with 21.3 million in the first quarter of 2012.

TPK led the way with a 29 percent marketshare of the tablet touch-screen display market, followed by Iljin Display with 15.5 percent market share and Foxconn's GIS with 1.3 percent market share.

TPK supplies tablet touch-screen displays to Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Barnes and Noble, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Asus.

IHS also found that the average selling price of tablet touch-screen panel modules is falling. Average pricing of 7-inch tablet touch panels fell to $15.60 in the first quarter of 2013, down a sharp 16 percent from $18.60 in the year-ago quarter.

Pricing for 7-inch touch panels dropped by 7.5 percent from $15.60 in the fourth quarter, IHS noted.
