Mobile commerce gaining popularity in an unlikely place
The availability of mobile phones is changing how things are done in a somewhat surprising corner of the world--Africa. Services such as mobile money transfers and payments are taking off where many a start-up in more developed countries has failed to capitalize. One factor in favor of mobile payment appears to be the difficulty in getting a bank account for many, as well as the difficulty of getting cash in rural areas. With a membership of 2 million a year after its launch, M-PESA is one such service. By simply sending an SMS, it is possible for someone in an urban area to "send" money to relatives in rural areas, and vice versa.
