Mobile is fastest growing advertising area
Mobile advertising is now the fastest growing area of global adspend, with mobile display, search and in-app ads growing six times the rate of desktop Internet advertising.
"Forecasts suggest that mobile advertising will continue to grow by an average of 50 percent a year between 2013 and 2016, thanks to the widening penetration of smartphones and tablets," writes Christopher Ratcliff on the E-Consultancy blog.
Thirty-five percent of all money spent on advertising between 2013 and 2016 will go toward mobile, according to research from ZenithOptimedia. By 2016, mobile will overtake radio, magazines and outdoor advertising spend, says Ratcliff.
These findings align with another recent mobile adspend report from StartApp. The report targeted in-app advertising as the fastest growing area in the mobile advertising market. In-app advertising is forecast to reach $17 billion by 2018, up from 3.5 billion in 2013, according to StartApp.
Despite its quickening pace, mobile advertising spend still doesn't hold a candle to Internet advertising, notes Ratcliff.
Research from ZenithOptimedia finds global Internet adspend grew 16 percent in 2013 and is forecasted to grow an average of 16 percent a year between 2014 and 2016. Meanwhile, the research finds social media advertising is growing about 29 percent a year and online video advertising is growing about 23 percent a year.
