Mobile workers comprise nearly one-third of total workforce, survey finds
Mobile workers now comprise nearly one-third of the total workforce in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, according to a survey of 1,217 organizations in those countries by Strategy Analytics.
Enterprise spending on mobile devices, software-as-a-service, infrastructure-as-a-service and security software increased the most last year compared with 2013, the survey found.
Mobility investments are being driven by line-of-business management and IT, while IT, sales and customer service will be the key drivers for mobile app development over the next year.
Other findings of the survey include:
- Around half of security software is still installed on-premise, but security software is moving to private and public clouds.
- The trend toward a diverse smartphone environment in the enterprise will continue into the future.
- Business use of email has surpassed voice for the first time on smartphones.
- More businesses are using tablets to view documents, email and presentations.
"The continued growth of business mobile devices, BYOD, cloud, security, and business applications and contents will continue to drive the growth of the enterprise mobility market moving forward," said Gina Luk, senior analyst of mobile workforce strategies at Strategy Analytics.
The market research firm predicted that the enterprise mobility trend would drive some of the largest corporate spending this year. In particular, enterprises will invest more in mobile apps and enhanced enterprise mobility management capabilities to secure apps and data this year.
"In the year ahead, enterprise mobility will continue to be shaped by consolidation, competition and customer requirements. Vendors and end-users of enterprise mobility services and solutions should anticipate shifts in the overall market, adjustments to the competitive scenarios, and continued technology evolution," concluded Andrew Brown, executive director of enterprise research at Strategy Analytics.
