Motorola sells Good Technology to Visto
Motorola has agreed to sell its Good Technology division to California-based push email provider Visto for an undisclosed price. This brings to a close Motorola's ambitious plan to compete with Research In Motion (RIM) and its popular BlackBerry range of devices, through the acquisition of Good Technology in 2007.
Indeed, since 2007, Motorola has only succeeding in slipping from its number two position as mobile vendor. Though it is reportedly making a major push into building Android-based handsets, Motorola has posted a $3.6 billion loss in the last quarter of 2008, with the company announcing plans to lay off up to 3,000 staff from its handset division as it attempts to shave off more than a billion in costs.
So what does the future brings for Good Technology and Visto? Carsten Brinkschute, CEO of UK-based mobile email and synchronization specialist Synchronica, offers his thoughts on the acquisition. Visto seems to lock themselves into the enterprise space with this deal. Good is a completely proprietary system which has substantial overlap with the existing Visto solution. From a technical perspective, I don't see many synergies, just a lot of overlap.
