Motorola unveils rugged WiFi handheld to deal with spotty in-building mobile coverage
Motorola Solutions unveiled a ruggedized WiFi-enabled enterprise handheld device designed for customer-facing applications in vertical markets such as healthcare, manufacturing, hospitality, retail and government. Motorola said the device helps enterprises eliminate the challenges associated with in-building cellular coverage.
The highly rugged MC55A0 is designed with government-grade security features and is able to come out unscathed after 1,000 turns in a rotating tumble drum, drops from six feet and temperature extremes.
The device, which runs on Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows Mobile 6.5 Classic, features a 3.5-inch color VGA display that is designed to work in any light conditions, supports voice, including push-to-talk calls, and data over WiFi, includes four scanner options for bar codes and comes with a 3.2-megapixel color camera with video abilities. The MC55A0 also supports virtual private networks (VPNs).
"Delivering new levels of business efficiency and enhanced customer service, the WiFi-enabled MC55A0 series also eliminates the common challenges associated with in-building cellular coverage for real-time access to business-critical information, while leveraging the field-proven rugged form factor and accessories of the MC55," Girish Rishi, Motorola Solutions' corporate vice president and general manager of mobile computing, said in a release.
