New AMD platform aims to beat Ultrabooks on price
AMD is preparing to roll out a new chipset for ultrathin computers to undercut Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) Ultrabooks by as much as 20 percent, reports Monica Chen at DigiTimes. Even as Intel nears its planned April launch of the Ivy Bridge platform for Ultrabooks, AMD is trying to woo vendors to its new "Ultrathin" platform.
AMD is pursuing a low-price strategy using its Trinity-based APU for the ultrabook market. AMD technology is expected to be found in 20 ultrabooks rolled out this year, while Intel's platform is anticipated in as many as 75 models.
Intel Ultrabooks on the market today tend to cost around $900, and some models reach as high as $1400. Chen reports that while the Ultrathin platform is not seen as giving ultrabooks a significant advantage with regard to function or performance, it is slated to lower the price by $100 to $200.
