Boeing unveiled its Black secure smartphone this week, according to Reuters. In the works for three years, the Android-based phone encrypts calls and destroys data if anyone attempts to open the casing. The smartphone is designed for government agencies and contractors who need to keep communication and data secure. Burger King is missing a big opportunity by not customizing its SMS for the local market, according to a report by Mobile Marketer. "Burger King appears to be using MMS at the corporate level to advertise national promotions, raising brand awareness of existing offers rather than delivering localized or mobile-exclusive discounts and promotions," says Zach Zimmerman, marketing manager at HelloWorld. >> Smartphone growth to slow to single digits by 2017

Market research firm IDC forecasts smartphone shipments will slow to 8.3 percent in 2017 and 6.2 percent in 2018, down from 39.2 percent growth last year. This year smartphone shipment growth is expected to increase 19.3 percent this year, reaching 1.2 billion units. "2014 will be an enormous transition year for the smartphone market. Not only will growth decline more than ever before, but the driving forces behind smartphone adoption are changing. New markets for growth bring different rules to play by and 'premium' will not be a major factor in the regions driving overall market growth," says Ryan Reith, program director with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. >> Global LTE subscribers to top 2B in 2019

Global LTE subscriptions are forecast by ABI Research to exceed two billion in 2019, after increasing at a 43.6 percent compound annual growth rate over the next five years. Last year, global LTE subscriptions reached 230 million. "Among the LTE subscription growth, Asia-Pacific contributes the most with a 49% market share. The second greatest contributor is North America with an 18% share. The large population base in Asia combined with rapid LTE network deployment and cost-competitive smartphones has accelerated the remarkable subscriber adoption," comments Marina Lu, research associate at ABI. The worldwide wireless gigabit market is forecast by Juniper Research to increase at an aggressive 158.25 percent compound annual growth rate through 2018. A key factor contributing to this market growth is the proliferation of internet connected devices, as well as the increasing adoption of tri-band solutions.
