At its I/O developers' conference this week, Google unveiled its Android Work platform, which provides a set of native mobile device management features and IT controls for the Android operating system, CIO reports. For the next iteration of Android, Google is integrating security features from Samsung's Knox mobile security platform into the native Android OS. Android Work also has a device policy client that enables IT to separate sensitive corporate data from personal data on the smartphone, the report relates. Read more

Oracle has updated its Oracle SOA Suite 12c system integration software to handle data from mobile and Web applications, relates InfoWorld. The software can now recognize popular data formats and communications protocols used by these external apps. "You can now expose any existing application through a mobile interface without rewriting the application," the article quotes Amit Zavery, Oracle's group vice president for its Fusion Middleware line of software, as saying. Despite the lack of a business case, rollouts of voice over LTE (VoLTE) are taking off, judges market research firm Infonetics Research. By the end of 2014, Infonetics expects an additional 30 commercial VoLTE networks to launch, and VoLTE subscribers to increase to 51 million, up from four networks and 12 million subscribers in 2013. In addition, Japan's Line overtook Skype in the mobile VoIP market. "Line's been able to successfully think outside the traditional voice box, offering paid services through application add-ons like games and stickers that not only create a revenue stream, but also increase usage of core services," says Diane Myers, principal analyst for VoIP, UC and IMS at Infonetics. Celtra has released its AdCreator mobile ad analytics platform that includes cross-screen viewability metrics, accidental ad expansion tracking and performance benchmarking. According to Celtra, this is the first product to provide viewability metrics on both in-app and mobile web environments. "For our viewability metrics release we've partnered with both media owners and buyers to explore together how ad viewability can improve the quality of advertising not only on mobile web and desktop, but also in mobile apps," says Matevz Klanjsek, cofounder and chief product officer at Celtra. In the 2014 first quarter, smartphone shipments accounted for more than half of Thailand's mobile phone market for the first time, according to the latest stats from IDC. Shipments of smartphones increased 27 percent year-over-year in the first quarter, compared with a 27 percent year-over-year decline for feature phones. "The transition has been driven largely by the carriers, which have been relentlessly persuading customers to adopt smartphones after the 3G licenses were granted. These trends are in line with IDC's prediction that 2014 will be the first year smartphones outsell feature phones in Thailand," says Satianporn Suvansupa, associate market analyst for client devices research at IDC Thailand.
