No special version of Windows 7 for netbooks
Microsoft has finally announced the details of how it will be selling Windows 7. I'll have more details on the six different editions in the next FierceCIO:TechWatch. What I'll say though is this: There will be no special version of Windows 7 that specifically caters to netbooks. This makes sense in a couple of ways.
First of all, Windows 7 has already been tweaked to have a smaller memory footprint. So unlike the situation with Windows Vista, Windows 7 should be able to run just fine even on netbooks. The second argument has to do with the shifting goalpost of what constitutes a netbook. As can be evidenced by the paradigm shift that led to the rise of netbooks, computers can literally come in all shapes and sizes. As AMD and Intel scramble to create newer and more battery efficient processors to address this market segment, one can safely expect more changes ahead.
