Nokia Music now offers updates on musicians.

Nokia Music, which comes pre-installed on the manufacturer's Lumia smartphones, touts playlists spanning a variety of genres, curated by music experts and recording artists. Consumers may also select the 'Create' function, which generates customized playlists inspired by their favorite artists. All playlists are available for offline listening.

The Nokia Music upgrade alerts consumers to upcoming gigs in their immediate area. Users may also "like" favorite artists to further personalize their listening experience, creating alerts when those acts release new records. Nokia Music also will recommend artists based on the user's listening history and the contents of their music library.

The Nokia Music update is available to all Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8 and will be available for download from Microsoft's Windows Phone Store beginning today. In addition to the free Nokia Music service, there's Nokia Music+, priced at $3.99 per month, which adds unlimited downloads and skips, higher quality streams, lyrics (presented in a scrolling list, Karaoke-style format or a display users can swipe up and down) and a Web application supporting desktop access.

Sales of Lumia smartphones increased 112.7 percent year-over-year during the second quarter of 2013, according to research firm Gartner. "With the recent announcement of the Lumia 1020, Nokia has built a wide portfolio of devices at multiple price points, which should boost Lumia sales in the second half of 2013," said Gartner principal research analyst Anshul Gupta.
