Nokia, Rovio team for Windows Phone-exclusive 'Angry Birds Roost'

Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and Rovio Entertainment launched Angry Birds Roost, a new addition to the wildly popular mobile game franchise developed exclusively for the handset maker's Lumia smartphone series.

Available for Lumia devices running Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 7.5 or higher, Angry Birds Roost does not include a gameplay component--the app is instead designed as a hub for fans, complete with access to premium Rovio titles, news updates, wallpapers, ringtones, user reviews and video tutorials. In addition, Lumia owners can snap photos, add Angry Birds characters to the image and share the end result via Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Twitter, MMS or email.

In May, Nokia and Rovio announced an agreement to collaborate on new consumer products and content exclusives for Lumia phones. Rovio also assembled a dedicated design and development team to create games for Nokia Lumia smartphones and other Windows Phone devices.

The Angry Birds franchise topped the 1 billion cumulative download mark earlier this year--Angry Birds Star Wars, the fifth installment in the main series, is slated for release on Nov. 8. Rovio has also expanded beyond its signature property with the bestselling Amazing Alex, issued this summer.
