Nvidia unveils Tegra computer-on-a-chip

Nvidia unveiled its Tegra computer-on-a-chip at Computex 2009 this week. It also spread the word that more than 10 computer makers will be releasing various mobile gadgets and devices based on Tegra. Expected to hit the United States by Thanksgiving, they will be priced ranging from $100 to $200.

The Nvidia Tegra is a low-power chip with a multiprocessor architecture. Aptly termed as a computer-on-a-chip, the Tegra has processor units for specific tasks, ranging from an ARM CPU for general purpose computing, to a HD video processor for HD video playback and a graphics processor.

At less than half a watt of power consumption, the Tegra competes well with Intel's Atom or Qualcomm's Snapdragon. As an example, it will be possible to build devices based on the Tegra to watch up to 10 hours of high-definition video on a single battery charge.
