Opera launches Appcelerate app store developer program

Weeks after launching its Opera Mobile Store app marketplace, mobile browser kingpin Opera Software introduced Appcelerate, a program promising developers the tools and resources to promote their content via channels targeting specific devices, platforms and international markets.

Appcelerate allows developers to pay to promote apps to users by geography and operating system.

According to Opera, Appcelerate touts pay-per-download pricing options giving developers the flexibility to promote their apps within the Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers, focusing solely on the operating systems and geographies they wish to reach--Opera Mobile Store will bill developers only when users download their application, and for a limited time, Opera is offering matching co-marketing funds for qualified programmers.

The Opera Mobile Store (built in association with white-label storefront solutions provider Appia) spans more than 200 countries and every mobile platform, offering both premium and free applications. Although the store is a featured Speed Dial link on the Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers, it is also accessible across devices running non-Opera browsers. Developers earn 70 percent of net revenues generated via the Opera Mobile Store--during February pre-launch trials, the store attracted more than 15 million users from 200 countries, with downloads exceeding 700,000 per day.

The Opera Mini browser now serves 100 million mobile subscribers each month, up from 50 million in February 2010. In addition, daily Opera Mini page views now top 2 billion, doubling July 2010 totals. Opera Mini touts PC-like web access on mobile device screens--the solution compresses webpages to one tenth of their original size, accelerating page delivery speeds while reducing data usage and fees. Late last month, Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) rolled out Opera Mini across select feature phones, indicating plans to preload the application across additional handsets later this year.
