Opera mobile browser users top 200M worldwide
More than 200 million users worldwide accessed the web via Opera mobile browsers in June 2012, a 47 percent year-over-year increase.
Opera Software reports that roughly 183 million subscribers used its Opera Mini browser, with the remaining 17 million accessing the Opera Mobile browser. Opera Mini users viewed more than 115 billion web pages in June, a 55 percent increase compared to a year earlier--in addition, the browser served more than 2 million MB of data, up 88 percent.
Opera credits the growth in part to surging activity across the African continent, where mobile phones are the most popular means for accessing the Internet. Thirty-six African nations more than doubled their Opera Mini userbases in the previous year, with Côte d'Ivoire alone increasing 600 percent over the last 12 months. Opera adds that data growth is outpacing pageview growth across Africa, suggesting that users are browsing larger pages and richer, more advanced websites.
An Opera survey conducted earlier this year revealed that 56 percent of Opera Mini and Opera Mobile users worldwide access the Web solely on mobile devices.
