PayPal expands mobile payments app to Microsoft's Windows Phone
PayPal is rolling out a mobile payments application optimized for Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone operating system. The app joins PayPal's existing mobile services for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android.
PayPal's mobile payments application is now available for Windows Phone users.
The free PayPal for Windows Phone enables users to send money to friends using their bank or PayPal account as a funding source. Consumers may also check their current balance, withdraw funds or view past transactions and identify local merchants that support the PayPal Here service, which enables small businesses and other users to process credit and debit transactions by swiping cards through a small, triangle-shaped dongle that attaches to their smartphone or tablet. More than 300,000 merchants in the U.S. and Hong Kong have signed up for PayPal Here since the service launched in March.
eBay-owned PayPal boasts 113 million active online customers worldwide, with more than 50 million in the U.S. market. The firm expects to handle $10 billion in mobile payment transactions in 2012, an increase of 150 percent over a year ago. In addition to its smartphone applications and PayPal Here, the company is currently conducting mobile wallet trials across American retail chains including Home Depot, Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle Outfitters, JCPenney, Foot Locker, Office Depot and Toys "R" Us.
Beginning in 2013, Discover will enable all of its 7 million merchant partners across the U.S. to accept PayPal wallet transaction--the firms are also negotiating to extend the alliance to Discover's international payments network. Fast food giant McDonald's is also trialing PayPal mobile wallet services enabling consumers to place and pay for orders via dedicated smartphone app or the mobile Web.
