Phone makers to standardize on micro USB chargers

An alliance of operators and handset vendors has agreed on a standard power charger with a micro USB standard for all mobile phones. Led by the GSM Association (GSMA), the scheme was announced yesterday.

Having a standard charger will in theory also allow mobile phone makers to ship phones without bundling one with every single phone they sell, which can only be considered environmentally friendlier. At the moment, there is no mention of when the certified compatible charger will appear, though the target set by the GSMA would be for 50 percent of phones to use this charger in 2012.
