Privacy-conscious employees, not security-concerned IT pros, are behind BYOD delays
Despite the perception that IT departments concerned about security have been the main stumbling block to BYOD programs, employees worried about privacy are behind much of the delay in BYOD program rollout.
That is a conclusion of a survey of 2,242 end users and IT administrators conducted by cloud access security broker Bitglass.
A majority of employees have chosen not to participate in their company's BYOD program because they don't want the IT department to have visibility into their personal data and apps through enterprise mobility management products. Surprisingly, 38 percent of IT admins surveyed are also not participating in their firm's BYOD program for the same reason.
A full 66 percent of millennials said they would not participate in BYOD programs in which employers have the ability to wipe their personal mobile device to protect proprietary information.
"From an employee standpoint, the biggest challenges are privacy concerns over what does the IT department have visibility into and what do they have control over on my device….Am I giving up my privacy in exchange for having access to corporate email and apps on my device?" said Rich Campagna, vice president of products and marketing with Bitglass.
"Overall, the deployment [of EMM solutions] becomes complicated and IT runs into challenges, either a lot of help-desk tickets or incompatibilities with new operating systems. This turns BYOD to a headache for a lot of these organizations on the IT side," Campagna told FierceMobileIT.
"As a result, BYOD adoption has been a lot lower than a lot of people expected over the last few years," Campagna added.
Bitglass offers an alternative to EMM for enterprises through its cloud access security broker service, so it has an interest in highlighting the problems with EMM. But the survey provides some insight into the privacy, security and IT support challenges raised by BYOD programs.
