The pros and cons of Verizon Wireless' iPad offering
While several surveys have pointed to massive adoption of the iPhone if Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) were ever to carry the device, a test of just how popular an Apple-Verizon Wireless combination is may occur next week when Verizon Wireless squares off against AT&T (NYSE: T) Wireless to offer the iPad.
Last week, Verizon Wireless announced plans to offer a WiFi version of the iPad bundled with the MiFi device on Oct. 28, the same day AT&T is expected to sell a WiFi plus 3G version of the iPad in its retail stores. Unlike a Verizon iPhone offering (which folks are clamoring for), the iPad offering from Verizon might not be as attractive as the AT&T iPad offering for the enterprise user. But you can decide for yourself with this little list of pros and cons:
Pros:
- According to research firm Current Analysis, the bundled option Verizon Wireless is significantly lowering the price of the MiFi hotspot device from $270 to $140 for non-contract users. The firm points out that this is an excellent deal for users wanting both a MiFi device for other WiFi-enabled devices and an iPad. The Verizon iPad-MiFi bundle will cost the same as buying a 3G iPad, namely $630 for the 16GB model, $730 for 32GB, or $830 for 64GB.
- The MiFi device can connect up to five WiFi-enabled devices.
- Verizon has more pricing options than AT&T that cater to more heavy users. The operator will offer three pricing plans: $20 for 1 GB of data, $35 for 3 GB and $50 for 5 GB. AT&T is offering two plans: $15 for 250 MB of data and $29 for 2 GB of data. Both Verizon and AT&T plans include free WiFi.
- The operator has a good reputation for coverage.
Cons:
- Not everyone wants to carry around two devices. Without the MiFi device, the iPad cannot be used.
- Verizon iPad users are also relying on the connection of the MiFi device. As Current Analysis points out, since the MiFi can connect up to five different devices, connectivity might not be so optimal, which impacts data speeds.
- While the iPad offers 10 hours of battery life, you will only see three to four hours of connectivity with the MiFi. Carry extra batteries for the MiFi.
- Verizon's iPad plans are not available for existing MiFi users.
- AT&T offers unlimited free WiFi hotspot access at its plethora of hotspots nationwide, negating the need for some to pay the higher price for 3G connectivity.
Of course the biggest winner is Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), which now expands its devices beyond one operator in the U.S.
