Digital entertainment services firm RealNetworks has acquired Linux-based solutions provider Varia Mobile, which spun out of AOL-owned Tegic Communications three years ago. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Varia targets operators, content providers and manufacturers via software applications developed to simplify and enhance the mobile user experience--CEO John McQueen will join RealNetworks a vice president of business development and OEM.

TechFlash speculates the Varia acquisition relates directly to RealNetworks' rumored efforts to create cloud-based content services. RealNetworks senior vice president of media cloud computing and services Hank Scorny confirmed the Varia deal but declined further explanation, saying "We are not going to comment beyond recognizing the work that they have done in the past. We are going to keep our powder dry for future announcements."
