RealNetworks customizes ringtones & RBTs

Cutting Tunes, a new service from RealNetworks, lets consumers pick and choose which portion of a song they want to be their ringtone or ringback tone (RBT) as long as the necessary content licensing requirements are in place.  To make the ringtone, a customer just has to use their PC to select the song, choose any part of the song to be a ringtone or RBT and download it over the air to the handset. Subscribers can buy the service for their own handset or gift the customized ringtone or RBT for a friend.

The service will be available in second quarter 2009 and will be targeted at operator's with existing Real-powered music-on-demand, RT or RBT service. In an interview with FierceMobileContent, RealNetwork's vice president of global marketing and product management Larry Moores said that having the right content licensing agreements in place is key to the new service.
