Rebuilt MTV app for iOS adds full-episode streaming, second-screen features
Viacom is rolling out a redesigned MTV application for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, adding full episodes of selected series including Teen Wolf and Catfish, as well as exclusive content and second-screen interactive features.
The free MTV app offers on-demand streaming support to subscribers across nine service providers: AT&T (NYSE:T) U-verse, Bright House Networks, Cablevision, DirectTV, Hawaiian Telecom, RCN, Suddenlink, Time Warner Cable and Verizon (NYSE:VZ) FiOS, which collectively reach close to 50 million homes. In addition to current network programs, MTV is including complete episodes of past hits like Beavis & Butt-head and Daria. Subscribers to other cable providers may still access video previews, after shows, bonus clips and original digital series.
The MTV app also features viewing companion experiences enabling fans to interact via Twitter, take quizzes, read behind-the-scenes scoops and view photos while watching their favorite primetime series. MTV previously offered similar features in its standalone MTV WatchWith and VH1 CoStar apps; Kristin Frank, executive vice president of connected content for Viacom Music and LOGO Group, told CNet that Viacom will phase out those legacy apps.
Frank added that Viacom will expand the MTV app to Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android later this year, and it is also working on similar apps for its VH1, LOGO and CMT cable properties.
