Report: Google adding advertising to Gmail app for Android

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) appears poised to expand its advertising efforts to its Gmail application for Android, bringing the messaging app in line with its Web counterpart.

Android Police reports that the most recent update to Google's Gmail for Android APK introduces support for a new library dubbed simply "ads," including eight classes all related to ad presentation, e.g. "AdTeaserView," "AdHeaderView" and "AdSenderHeaderView." Android Police's APK teardown also reveals multiple additional references to advertising-based services, including an option to save ads as mobile messages.

Google has not responded to requests for comment.

Google rolled out an overhauled version of Gmail for Android last week, highlighted by a retooled conversation view that adopts the virtual index card-style user interface first introduced via the company's Google Now personal assistant service. The app is leveraging the card UI to deliver "a new, cleaner design," according to a Google+ post. "The update also includes a number of additional design tweaks such as checkmarks for multiple message selection so you can easily see what messages you are about to move, archive or delete."

The overall mobile ad market is expected to grow 89 percent to $16.65 billion worldwide this year, according to an eMarketer forecast issued late last month. Google is on pace to claim 53.17 percent of the market, up from 52.36 percent a year ago, thanks largely to continued growth in mobile search traffic and the expansion of its YouTube monetization efforts. Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) is expected to surge from 5.35 percent global mobile ad share in 2012 to 15.8 percent this year: This summer, the social network announced that mobile ads now generate 41 percent of its total revenues, up from 30 percent in the first quarter of this year.
