RIM makes Citrix Receiver available for BlackBerry PlayBook
Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) announced that the Citrix Receiver enterprise virtualization software for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is now available for beta testing and can be downloaded from the Test Center in the BlackBerry App World storefront.
The software enables enterprise users to access virtual desktops on servers running Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows along with enterprise applications hosted within the enterprise to enable standalone apps virtualization. According to RIM, the Citrix Receiver allows users to open any Windows software installed on the server being access, software as a service (SaaS) or web applications.
Other features include multitasking between virtualized applications and desktops. "From a user perspective, this is similar to the multi-tab browsing experience on the BlackBerry PlayBook browser," RIM said in a blog post. "Users will be able to work like they do on a desktop or laptop with multiple applications running simultaneously, but do so remotely from the BlackBerry tablet."
Another feature includes IT-controlled built-in enterprise app hosting. When implemented, the IT department can host an app server, such as Citrix XenApp, and allow end users to select apps to use via the Citrix Receiver from this server.
