RIM releases Bold 9650 smartphone along with a smaller version of the Pearl
Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) introduced the BlackBerry Bold 9650 smartphone and the petite BlackBerry Pearl 3G device, during its Wireless Enterprise Symposium.
The Bold 9650 includes built-in GPS and WiFi and includes a full QWERTY keyboard and an optical track pad, which is replacing the well-known trackball. The device supports CDMA, EV-DO, HSPA and quad-band EDGE/GPRS/GSM networks overseas. That means the Bold is supporting CDMA for the first time and marks the abandonment of the Tour line of high-end BlackBerry devices.
"We're just trying to position Bold as the flagship product line across both technologies," Alan Brenner, senior vice president of BlackBerry Platform, told eWeek.
The Bold 9650 measures 4.4 by 2.4 by .56 inches and weighs 4.8 ounces. It includes 512MB Flash memory and an expandable memory card slot that supports up to 32GB MicroSDHC cards, with a 2GB card included. The high-resolution display is 480 by 360 pixels and measures 2.44 inches. RIM indicated the device would become available in May. Sprint said it will begin selling the devices on May 26.
Meanwhile, the BlackBerry Pearl 3G is the smallest BlackBerry RIM has ever made, measuring at 4.25 by 1.96 by .52 inches and 3.3 ounces. Mike McAndrews, vice president of product marketing for RIM called the Pearl 3G the sports car of BlackBerry smartphones. The phone will feature a condensed QWERTY keyboard and support for HSPA, WiFi and GPS. It sports a 3.2 MP camera with flash, a 624MHz processor with 256 MB flash memory, and storage for up to 32GB of personal content. RIM said this device will also become available in May.
