RIM talks about BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0
Research In Motion finally showcased the new version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) application at a press event late last week. BES 5.0 will work like earlier versions, residing behind the enterprise firewall to perform secure synchronization of data between BlackBerry smartphones and enterprise email and collaboration servers.
As expected, BES 5.0 will allow over-the-air updates for BlackBerry smartphones in the field. More importantly, BES 5.0 will feature a multi-server architecture capable of scaling up to about 100,000 smartphones with high availability features, which is significantly more than Microsoft's largest known implementation of Windows Mobile smartphones to date.
In addition, staffers can also access files stored on the corporate network, wirelessly downloading them to their BlackBerry smartphones. They can then view it with DataViz's Documents To Go bundled on their smartphones, or connect it to their laptops as a USB flash drive in order to view it from their desktop.
In addition, administrative functions are now performed over a web-based interface, and are designed for IT departments to have easier and more granular control over their fleet of smartphones. BES 5.0 will be available in the second quarter of this year. No pricing information is available yet.
