Rovio prepping 'Angry Birds Star Wars' sequel integrating interactive toys

Rovio Entertainment and Lucasfilm Ltd. will launch the sequel to their bestselling Angry Birds Star Wars on Sept. 19. The publisher did not specify which operating systems it will target, but promised the title would go live "in app stores worldwide."

Angry Birds Star Wars II will lauch Sept. 19.

Angry Birds Star Wars II will continue following the storyline of the three Star Wars prequel movies, Rovio said, pitting the Rebel Birds against the evil Imperial Pigs. This time around, gamers can choose to "Join the Pork Side" and play as one of the pigs. Angry Birds Star Wars II also will integrate with Telepods, a new interactive toy line developed by manufacturer Hasbro. Players can purchase Telepods and scan the toys into the mobile gameplay experience, unlocking new characters and experiences. Hasbro will roll out more than 30 Telepods figures in advance of the game's debut.

Rovio additionally will release its own line of Angry Birds Star Wars II merchandise, including toys, apparel, books and accessories.

Rovio premiered the original Angry Birds Star Wars in late 2012, topping Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store download chart within hours of launch and generating more than 100 million installs in the months since. It is the fifth installment in the main Angry Birds series, which first debuted in late 2009.

Gamers have now downloaded more than 1.7 billion Rovio titles across all platforms, and monthly active users top 263 million. The publisher reported full-year 2012 revenues of $195 million, up from $97 million the previous year, fueled by continuing demand for Angry Birds titles as well as branded merchandise sales.
