Rovio Mobile is poised to launch an animated series based on its Angry Birds gaming franchise. Slated to premiere this fall, the series will consist of 52 short-form episodes running less than three minutes each.

"We're going to roll it out on all possible devices," Rovio animation chief Nick Dorra revealed at the MIPTV conference in Cannes, France. "We're looking at building a video app for that, and we're also looking at partnerships and so on... We want to be on all screens." It is unclear how Rovio plans to monetize the series. Dorra added that the firm is working on a feature-length animated Angry Birds project, but "it won't be out in 2013 or 2014."

Rovio is also working on new mobile titles, some with no connection to the Angry Birds brand. "We are going to release completely new IP this year," Dorra said. "But we are also working on bringing new projects in the Angry Birds universe that have nothing to do with the gameplay we have seen before."

The Angry Birds franchise is closing in on a billion cumulative downloads; Rovio has also sold millions of plush toys and t-shirts. Late last year, the company said it is planning an initial public offering on the Hong Kong stock exchange in 2013.

Rovio launched its latest title Angry Birds Space last month on Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android mobile devices, alongside desktop versions for Windows PCs and Apple's Mac platform. Angry Birds Space transplants the titular heroes and their pig opponents to new planets and zero gravity environments, complete with space footage filmed by NASA. Consumers downloaded the new game more than 10 million times in under three days of availability.
