Rovio's ToonsTV channel tops 1B views, 'Angry Birds Toons' Season 2 on tap

Rovio Entertainment will begin airing the second season of its Angry Birds Toons animated series in 2014, concurrently premiering a new series spotlighting the publisher's Bad Piggies franchise and its popular Stella the pink bird character.

Rovio launched the weekly Angry Birds Toons series in March via the publisher's dedicated ToonsTV channel, which spans across Angry Birds games, select video-on-demand channel providers and more than 20 broadcast TV networks worldwide. Toons TV has now generated more than 1 billion views across all platforms.

Rovio is now expanding ToonsTV beyond its core properties into third-party content development. In the coming months, ToonsTV will roll out Stan Lee's Chakra the Invincible from POW! Entertainment and Graphic India as well as National Geographic Kids' Amazing Animals, The Jim Henson Company's Fraggle Rock and Xilam Animation's Oggy & the CockroachesZig & Sharko and Space Goofs. ToonsTV will also air unnamed shorts, specials and series based on classic Hasbro Studios brands.

Gamers have downloaded more than 1.7 billion Rovio titles across all platforms, and monthly active users top 263 million. The publisher reported full-year 2012 revenues of $195 million, up from $97 million the previous year, fueled by continuing demand for Angry Birds titles as well as branded merchandise sales. Rovio's animated Angry Birds feature film is slated to premiere July 1, 2016.

Earlier this year, Rovio unveiled a new advertising division spearheaded by former Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), MTV and Millennial Media (NYSE:MM) executives. The unit creates custom advertising programs for brands like McDonalds, Warner Brothers, Campbell's and others, letting them promote their products and services inside Rovio games. In May Rovio also debuted Rovio Stars, a new publishing program promoting mobile titles from third-party developers. Titles launched through the initiative include Nitrome Ltd.'s Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage and 5 Ants Games' Tiny Thief.
